I am an active life member of the Huntingdon No. 1 Fire Company, currently serving as Rescue Captain. Located in beautiful south-central Pennsylvania, The No. 1 Fire Company is one of two fire stations in the borough of Huntingdon. We are the oldest company in Huntingdon County, having started our service in 1804 as the Juniata Fire Company. We were chartered and re-named in 1873. No. 1 was the first company in our county to offer rescue services. We organized and began to respond to vehicle accidents in 1975 with three teams of trained firefighters. We added the Hurst "Jaws of Life" in 1977. Since then, we have added other Hurst products, Maxi Force airbags, shoreline rescue and high angle rescue to our list of services. The other company in town is the Hook & Ladder Fire Company, which started in 1923. Until a few years ago, they were the only company in our county with an aerial device, now there are four. Together, as the Huntingdon Fire Department, we provide service to about 12,000 residents of Huntingdon Borough and a part of Henderson Township, plus the many visitors passing through on the way to Raystown Lake. |
